Pioneer CD Decks

Have many other oldskool djs moved onto the cd decks yet? They are becoming the industry standard over many new genre's now and I haven't really seen if they have spread to the oldskool dj yet.

For the record, I've got one CDJ200 at the moment and am looking at getting another, or an 800 soon. Mainly use them for newer music but am burning some vinyl over time.

I love the added dimension a CDJ can give (layering / scratching vocal snippets / film & telly quotes etc) & I think the CDJ FX (loops etc) suit very well minimal modern music more than 'oldskool'.

I appreciate it's fast becoming the industry standard & it does have advantages in being able to carry a nights worth of tunes in a small wallet.

All that said.... you can't beat wax It's in the blood or it's not

There's a few good reasons to burn your oldskool though. I play on pirate radio and that gives a number of good reasons. Namely:
1) Carrying two hours (at least) worth of vinyl is pretty damn heavy.
2) If the studio was to get raided that would be my collection gone.
3) The equipment used is never top notch and bad/old needles can really destroy vinyl

I find cd's more entertaining for me to mix on at the moment. I still use vinyl and will do in the future. I just like the added flexibility of cd's. Even the pitch allows you to mix tunes that wouldn't normally manage to go together with 1210's.

They are great for old and new music alike, it's just another tool of the trade - why limit yourself to just vinyl, sometimes its convenient for whatever the reason to play a track off CD-R.

Denon are a cheaper and better make imo, you can get two Denon's for the price of 1 Pie in ear

Dont take this the wrong way , point 1, get a car , point 2, be careful or dont do pirate radio-its illegal ya know , run the risk etc, point 3, get good needles phones: (this is a must for anyone who values thier vinyl-surely)...but if its your thing who am I to question what you do with your vinyl/CDs, hey its your world just as much as its mine

1) I can't drive
2) It's not that illigal. Pirate played, and still does play, a massive part of this scene.
3) It's more to get confiscated.

Do all that for the love of vinyl. I use vinyl on radio now and will do untill the station get good enough cd decks to mix a whole show on. I do long for the ease of CDs though.

I don't see the reason why people have such a negative view toward mixing with cd's. There is very little difference imo. If anything I find cd more fun. Maybe thats because its newer to me but it offers a lot more flexibilty.

For me personally it's more to do with the fact that any no-mark oik can come along & download / play an mp3 burnt to CD of a tune that I may have grafted for 10 years or more to find on vinyl.

It may be selfish but I like exclusivity... or at least respect for the music... if you've gone after a tune for 10 years or more & spent that time up to your elbows in crates digging for it you are personally attached to that tune - it's in your soul & you won't rest until you've got it.

Too many people download instant collections with little or no passion or respect for the tunes they've acquired. It's substance over form & quantity over quality.

You've got to pay dues in my opinion.

Ahh. Now thats a different story. I'm talking about burning my own vinyl. I don't respect anybody ripping tunes they haven't hunted down and found themselves. I don't, and never will burn illigal copies of old or new music. Thats more about valuing the music than how you mix/play it.

You should be happy in knowledge that they are missing out on the thrill of getting your hands on a tune you've wanted for 10 or so years.

I remember finally IDing Lamborgini. The first person gave me the wrong tune (Hooligan 69) and I ended up getting good copies of both off ebay, boh at a good price. Was a great buzz when it finally came through the post.

Having collected vinyl in a serious way since 1990 & invested man hours searching that would make Philipine sweat shops feel embarrassed & money that would make Coleen seem thrifty I think I'm entitled to my opinion - moreover I believe I've paid my dues in sweat & passion

I am after a cd deck {Pioneer} but one thing i like doing with Vinyl as i am mixing is looking at the grooves and seeing where the little breaks are and drops etc i won't be able to do this anymore as i can mix any type of music but not seeing the grooves will make it a little harder for me if i have not mixed a certain tune before....

Like my Trance tunes on Vinyl i have a sticker with the letter of the key the tune is in so i mix in key as mixing Trance in key just sounds to sweet! as i want to keep your mind in the my mix HeHe!

My Hardcore i have BPMed them all!

Techno does'nt matter they go together no matter what but i sold nearlly all my Techno to my mate anyway next sell me Trance keep me Hardcore get some Pioneers

dunno bout other cd decks, but if u get pioneers cdj 1000's mk 2/3 thay have a display which shows the wave of the tune.thus the peaks n troughs in the wave is exactly the same as reading the cuts on the vinyl. tbh i hardly use my cdj(no i dont wanna sell it lol) but when i do i think its a lot harder than vinyl to mix with,but i guess that im in the minority there.

I have got a couple of mk1's they display the waves as well, got em off flea bay for less than the price of 1 new deck...Result!!

Stick to vinyl! the 100mks3 are gud fun , don't both with any less - I got rid of my 800s and my 500s - waste of time! I use the CDs for new music - but wouldnt dream of playing oldskool off em - oh wot an insult that wud be!
